For those who find themselves in the Gen X category, or even some of you Boomers, I am sure you will recall Hotelympia. Well, it may not be called that anymore, but that hasn’t stopped HRC (it’s current moniker) celebrating an incredible 90 years! Over that time, it’s true that much has changed across the hospitality industry, but the one thing that hasn’t is the fact that at its heart it’s a people business. However much technological advances can help drive guest experience and operational efficiencies, people will always be at the core of hospitality. Which is why it was so good to head up to the ExCel with fellow bean Clare Freeman to check out in person not one, but the four co-located shows: IFE, IFE Manufacturing, The Pub Show and HRC.

Clocking up 13K+ steps, we pounded the hall starting with IFE and ending with HRC. Along the way we noted the international nature of IFE with countries from every corner of the world represented and the prevalence of nuts, protein snacks and functional drinks. But aside from seeing our clients’ stands come to life, the best thing about the day was getting to bump into familiar faces, seemingly around every corner. From old colleagues and clients to industry contacts, current clients and friends – they were all there. Networking is a key part of this industry and over the years I have been lucky enough to meet and work with some wonderful people, so HRC can feel like a bit of a reunion. But it was also great to see so many fresh-faced students competing in the Salon Culinare, as well as hearing from a wide range of interesting speakers and panel sessions across a plethora of topics, and of course to get to try some exciting new products like The Hungry Boar’s new Sticklers. Here’s to the power of IRL, long may it reign!
